FIRST DAY | Iquitos – Entry to the Matsés territory

The expedition begins with pick-up at your hotel in Iquitos and transfer to the airport to board a small plane bound for the Matsés territory. During the flight you will be able to contemplate the immensity of the Peruvian Amazon, its extensive forests and the different natural landscapes that characterize this remote region.

Upon arrival at the community area, we will begin the approach to the Matsés territory, crossing forests and Amazonian ecosystems that have been little intervened. Once in the community, the learning experience will begin with local members, who will share traditional knowledge related to orientation, the natural environment, forest resources, and the community's relationship with its territory.

INTERMEDIATE DAYS | Yavarí, Galvez, Chobayacu, Matansa, Lobo and Ucayali Rivers – Matsés Survival and Culture

During the intervening days you will progressively develop different knowledge related to orientation, displacement and interpretation of the Amazonian environment. The activities will be accompanied by members of the Matsés community, allowing you to learn about traditional practices and understand the relationship between people, the forest and the rivers.

The first stage of exploration will take place on the Yavari River, where you will learn to recognize natural references, interpret the landscape, identify different Amazonian environments and select suitable routes for displacement. You will also learn basic principles for establishing camps and temporary shelters.

The expedition will continue along the Gálvez River, deepening knowledge related to the organization of camps, construction of shelters, responsible use of natural materials and traditional fishing techniques. Depending on the duration chosen, the route may continue to new river systems and progressively expand the learning activities.

In the longer programs, the exploration will continue to the Chobayacu River and later to the Matansa and Lobo Rivers, incorporating new knowledge about natural resources, plants, fruits, tracking, identification of footprints, observation of fauna and characteristics of the different Amazonian ecosystems. The walks and tours will allow you to observe birds, primates, reptiles and other species of the region.

The last stage of exploration will take place in the direction of the Ucayali River, where you will integrate the knowledge acquired during the expedition and learn about the importance of this great river system for Amazonian ecosystems and communities. Throughout the program you will also have the opportunity to learn about aspects of Matsés traditions, ancestral knowledge and worldview related to the forest and the territory.

LAST DAY | Río Ucayali – Nauta – Iquitos

After completing the activities corresponding to the chosen duration, we will begin the return by river following the Ucayali River and the Amazonian systems connected to the route until we reach Nauta. During the navigation you will be able to enjoy the forests, riverside landscapes and communities that are along the route.

From Nauta we will continue by road to Iquitos, where the expedition will end. Upon completion of the program you will receive a Certificate of Participation and Expeditionary Learning issued by Ceiba Jungle Expeditions, indicating the duration of the program carried out: 10, 15 or 20 days.
